I recently hired several new staff members. We usually instruct our new staff on how to use the various computer systems on our own. Since we had several new people and felt that some of the existing staff could use help with Eudora (an email application), we asked if John could arrange for a special training class for them. He arranged 2 classes for 12 of my staff members. All of them loved the class and said they learned a lot from John. Many of them even thanked me for sending them to the class.

My Thoughts: This came from my Commendation for Exceptional Service Award at Northwestern. By arranging 2 smaller classes, it allowed the department to maintain adequate coverage and allowed me the opportunity for robust dialog and interactivity between the participants in each class. Students regularly thank their instructors after class because they see the effort it takes to make a class run smoothly. However, when they report their satisfaction to their supervisor, and their supervisor formally reports this satisfaction, you know that you have made a big difference in people's work lives.
