Are Icons Suddenly Missing?
Some computers are set to customize the standard and formatting tool bars by promoting the icons you use frequently and demoting the icons you rarely use. To disable this feature, simply right click on one of the two toolbars, fins the customize option and deselect the top two checkboxes on the option tab of the dialog box.

Are Icons Suddenly Inactive?
Icons will become inactive when working on portions of a document that does not make use of a particular feature.  If you know that the feature is normally available, try clicking on a blank area of your document to make sure nothing is selected.  Most of the time this simple step reactivates the icon.
